What is a China Readiness Score and how is it measured?

TL;DR

This year, Chinafy tested 614 global websites from Mainland China. 66 percent failed to load in Beijing. The ones that did load averaged 17 seconds, in a market where users typically abandon a page after 3. Most teams aren't ignoring China on purpose. They simply have no visibility into it, because nothing alerts you when a site slows down or gets blocked there.

A China Readiness Score is a 0 to 100 diagnostic built to close that gap: real load times from three Mainland cities, which third-party services are blocked, and an early read on content that could raise compliance concerns.

Chinafy's China Readiness Report runs this scan on any URL in about 30 seconds, free, with no signup required.

What is China Readiness Score

A China Readiness Score is a diagnostic measurement, scored 0 to 100, of how a website actually performs and behaves for a visitor inside Mainland China, as distinct from how it performs everywhere else.

After more than six years working in cross-border web performance, the same pattern keeps showing up. A company spends months polishing load times and conversion rates. Someone in the room mentions China.

Suddenly nobody on the team actually knows what's happening with the site there, or what to do about it, and whatever the answer turns out to be, it needed to have been fixed yesterday.

Why the visibility gap exists in the first place

China doesn't send a warning when a website slows down or becomes inaccessible. There's no alert, no dashboard flag, no automatic notification.

Teams typically find out one of three ways:

A customer already in China mentions it

A deal falls through for reasons nobody can quite pin down

Or they never find out at all…

What this year's benchmark found

Chinafy tested 614 global websites from within Mainland China this year. 66 percent failed to load in Beijing. Among the ones that did load, the average load time was 17 seconds, in a market where users commonly abandon a page after 3 seconds.

The full methodology and findings are in Chinafy's State of China Web Performance report.

What a China Readiness Score actually measures

The score breaks down into three parts, matching what the China Readiness Report scans for on any URL submitted.

Technical performance in China

Total load time, a performance score, and third-party resource behavior, each benchmarked from Beijing, Shanghai, and Guangzhou against how the same page loads globally.

This is where the delivery-side gap becomes visible: a site that loads quickly from most of the world can still be materially slower from these three cities specifically.

Third-party resource compatibility

A read on which embedded services, things like Google-hosted assets, AWS-hosted resources, or HubSpot forms, are blocked, slow, or unreliable when requested from inside Mainland China.

This is usually where the largest performance gaps come from, more than server distance alone.

Content sensitivity flags

A preliminary read on content that could be considered culturally or sensitive within Mainland China. China's CAC and MIIT can restrict access to a site with no advance warning to the offshore operator, so this flag is meant to surface potential issues before they reach that point.

This score is a first-pass diagnostic, not a compliance guarantee.

It's a starting signal for where to look closer, not a final verdict on whether a site is fully compliant or fully optimized for China.

Why a single scan isn't a permanent answer

China's infrastructure and regulatory environment can shift. A third-party service that's accessible one month may become inaccessible the next, and the reverse can happen just as easily.

This is part of why a China Readiness Score works best as a first step rather than a one-time checklist.

Where the China Readiness Report fits

Run any URL through it, and it returns a China Readiness Score alongside real load times from Beijing, Shanghai, and Guangzhou, a breakdown of inaccessible or slow third-party services, and content sensitivity flags, all in about 30 seconds, free, with no signup required.

Once the gap is visible, Chinafy's optimization service is the next step for teams that want to close it, handling the third-party resource and infrastructure work without requiring a rebuild or rehost.

FAQ

How is the China Readiness Score calculated?

From three components: technical performance benchmarked from Beijing, Shanghai, and Guangzhou against global load times, third-party resource compatibility, and a preliminary content sensitivity read.

Do I need to sign up to use it?

No. The China Readiness Report is free and doesn't require a signup to run a scan.

Does a good score mean my site is fully compliant for China?

No. The score is a diagnostic starting point, not a compliance guarantee. For compliance-specific questions, consult your internal legal counsel or ask Chinafy to connect you with a partner.
