In China, travel websites surpassed Social Media as the most-used resource for overseas trip planning in 2017. Capture the world’s largest outbound market and increase direct online bookings with a more secure, consistent, and smooth web experience.
China has become the largest source of outbound tourists in the world, with 129 million trips in 2017…however, less than 10% of China’s population travel overseas and only 10% own a passport. This reflects a huge future potential for the outbound market.

The China Context

The Chinese outbound travel market is rapidly growing

Factors contributing to a rapidly growing Chinese outbound traveller market according to the World Tourist Organisation (UNWTO) include -

• A growing middle class
• An increasing affinity for experience-oriented lifestyles
• Friendlier visa procedures for those holding a Chinese passport - currently in over 60+ countries
• New International airports & routes
• Better access to online travel information
• Increasing number of China-friendly destinations*

*China-friendly destinations are defined as locations where intentional decisions are made to specifically cater to the Chinese traveller. This may include offering signage in Chinese, hiring Chinese-speaking staff, amending food options and so forth.
Spending from Chinese tourists abroad now account for

21%

of global travel spending in 2018
Among Chinese tourists who travelled overseas in 2017,

51%

had travelled to other Asian countries or regions
Chinese tourists, per person, spent an average of

US$ 762

Digital Channels

One of the greatest barriers listed by Chinese visitors to travel abroad, is lack of available information

More hotels and vendors are translating their sites into Chinese and on-boarding staff who speak Chinese in an effort to improve the Chinese outbound traveller experience and increase direct conversions.

Increase awareness and move customers along their decision journey by making your information more accessible online.

Policy Changes

Countries are changing policies to cater to welcome Chinese Tourists -  businesses should too.

As of early 2018, 66 countries and regions had altered their visa restrictions - making it easier for Chinese outbound tourists to travel to these locations.

Look for local policies or organisations, such as Visit California’d ‘China-Ready’ program, that you can partner with as a China-friendly business to increase your reach.
